532 bird species are listed by the state Ornithological Society.(as of Oct 2012). Accordingly, the state is rated fourth (behind Calif, Texas and Arizona) in most number of bird species/state.
The numerous bird species corresponds to the state's varied geography...ranging from deserts to mesas to snow-capped mountain peaks. Moreover, considerable areas are covered by forested mountain wilderness.
